The night of Mexican rock: Café Tacvba and Caifanes triumph in San Diego
With a sold-out show at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, Café Tacvba kicked off the night with classics.
San Diego CA.- Two legendary Mexican rock bands from the ‘90s, Café Tacvba and Caifanes, visited San Diego for a tour that unites them for the first time for their audience in the United States.
With a sold-out show at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, Café Tacvba kicked off the night with classics like “Cómo te extraño mi amor” and “María.” They also showcased their new studio album, “La Base,” featuring its titular single, which, despite being new, was well-received by the audience.
The Chilango quartet demonstrated their veteran prowess on stage with a flawless sound and responded to the warm reception from the San Diego crowd. “Smells like pure corn,” joked lead singer Rubén Albarrán, referring to the prevalent scent of marijuana in the audience, which has been legal in California since 2016.
One of the night’s surprises was “Ingrata,” a song Tacvba hadn’t performed live since 2019 due to social criticism of its lyrics. “You know we don’t play this song. We need permission from Tezcatlipoca,” Albarrán joked again. After the audience’s affirmative response, the band proposed a revised version more suitable for modern times.
Caifanes followed and couldn’t hide their joy as the crowd sang along to their hits, starting strong with “Los dioses ocultos,” “Viento,” and “No dejes que.” Saúl Hernández, in his typically brief style, expressed gratitude for the support of the “indomitable crowd.” “It’s a privilege to be in front of you. The applause is for you, folks,” Saúl added.
Café Tacvba and Caifanes are on their first joint tour across 20 U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Houston. After their San Diego performance, they will continue to Phoenix, Arizona, and conclude their tour on June 30 in Indiana.
